In this podcast, former One+One editor James Marcus Tucker joins Bradley Tuck to discuss how Exploding Appendix has grown out of One+One Filmmakers Journal and discuss the possibility of counter-culture in an age where counter-cultural tropes are being adopted by the alt-right and where political correctness threatens to curtail the possibility of counter-cultural expression.
Drawing on the films of Lars Von Trier, Todd Solondz, John Waters, Derek Jarman, Rainer Werner Fassbinder, Gus Van Sant and Walt Disney, the literature and social commentary of Malcolm X, Judith Butler, Lee Edelman, Brendon O’Neill, Ayn Rand and Milo Yiannopoulos, and  TV shows such as Game of Thrones and Queer as Folk,  they discuss:
  • the relation of counter-culture to the left-right divide
  • the differences between Marxist and alt-right critiques of identity politics
  • the centrist and right wing embrace of “progress”
  • the possibility of red entrepreneurialism, innovation and greed
  • the different interpretations of the concept of freedom
  • and the possibility of queer subversion after gay marriage.
