February 5, 2025Exploding Appendix Event Program 2025 (Online and in Person (Brighton). February to June)
February 10, 2025
What is a suit? What is its history? What is its symbolic value? How does the suit intersect with class, social status, gender, sexuality, and labour? What happens when the suit doesn’t fit—and how might it be worn in ways that don’t fit?
In this session, designer and tailor Marren Hager will join Bradley Tuck for a conversation and showcase exploring the history, semiotics, and subversion of the suit. Together, they will delve into the relationship between the suit and other garments, such as the boilersuit and the dress, and examine its connection to labour, sustainability, and affirmative tailoring.
Drawing on affirmative tailoring and sustainability practices, this session will reflect on the act of making and wearing a suit, its cultural significance, and what it might mean for the future of fashion and self-expression. The event will also feature a showcase of one of Marren Hager’s unique suit designs, bringing the conversation to life through craft and creativity.
