The Exploding Appendix Avant-garde Art Practice and Research Group meets upstairs at The Marwood, 52 Ship Street Brighton, England, BN1 1AF. The meet ups start at 7.30pm regularly on a Tuesday.
Our aim is to create a space where artists, intellectuals and others can meet to discuss ideas, issues and creative projects. Evenings tend to comprise of relaxed informal discussions about art, art projects and ideas, as well as a focal point. This might be a film screening, a live performance, an improvisation/creative session, a work in progress session, a reading group, a guest talk, an interview, a panel discussion, a debate, a workshop, an exhibition, live music or a party. This is all very flexible and can be built around the interests of the group.
The meetup runs alongside the Exploding Appendix website (www.explodingappendix.com), a multimedia online magazine that produces videos, podcasts, articles, interviews and visual essays exploring ideas and culture generally, and can be used as a platform for presenting projects related to the group.
Whilst drawing upon the history of avant-gardist and counter-cultural ideas we aim to explore a wide range of issues beyond the narrow purview of conventional art discussion. We welcome people working within different disciplines, different artistic mediums and coming from very different perspectives.
Below is the schedule for October and November:

8th October: Reading Mark Fisher’s The Weird and the Eerie
Mark Fisher’s book The Weird and The Eerie, published in 2016 by Repeater Books, deepens our understanding of the concepts of ‘the weird’ and ‘the eerie’ through a myriad of references: H.P. Lovecraft, H.G. Wells, The Fall, Tim Powers, Reiner Werner Fassbinder, Philip K Dick, David Lynch, Daphne Du Maurier, Christopher Priest, M.R James, Eno, Nigel Kneale, Alan Garner, Margaret Attwood, Jonathan Glazer, Stanley Kubrick, Andrei Tarkovsky, Christopher Nolan and Joan Lindsay. Join us as we explore the book, its references and themes. This session will be led by Bradley Tuck.

29th October: Ioanna’s Halloween Laboratory
For our special Halloween meetup Ioanna Alexia Pitsillou-Kruizenga will be presenting an experimental workshop exploring all things Halloween. More information to follow soon.

12th November: The Open-Mic Manifesto Night
Throughout the history of avant-garde movements the artist manifesto has become a fundamental  artistic medium in its own right. The avant-garde art manifesto has served to offer a vision for a new art movement,  sometimes a set of rules, sometimes artistic jest or poetic pronouncement, other times a polemical vision of the future. Artist manifestos throughout the 20th century combined artistic expression with socially engaged polemics to provide an artistic assault on the cultural stultification of the time. In the spirit of Futurists, Dadaists, Constructivists, Suprematists, Surrealists, Situationists, their contemporaries and their heirs, we invite you all for an evening of incendiary manifestoes. Please feel free to bring your own pioneering pronouncements! This could be a set of rules, a visionary proclamation, a film, a poem, a dance or anything that could be considered, in someway, ‘a manifesto.’ If you have something that you would like to bring, or have any questions please message explodingappendix [at] gmail.com

26th November: End of Year Party and Dadaist Cabaret
Following on from the success of last years Dada Cabaret and Christmas Party. We welcome you all to another end of year party in the spirit of Dadaist vaudeville. We welcome everyone to come along and participate. If you have anything that you would like to perform, please message us at explodingappendix [at] gmail.com.
