As 2017 draws to a close the Exploding Appendix team would like to thank all those involved in this first year of Exploding Appendix. For us there have been many highlights including our launch event in October on ‘The Future of the Avant-Garde” (see first picture), our involvement in a panel on whether fashion statements can be political statements at the Battle of ideas (see picture above), and our Christmas event this December (see bottom of the page). Check out this year’s podcasts, dance videos, gallery pieces and episodes of The Bradley Show and look out for more videos, podcasts and events coming in the new year.
Artist Residency – Daniel & Clara
Along with many other exciting projects coming in 2018, Exploding Appendix will be joined by Daniel & Clara for a year long artist residency. Daniel Fawcett and Clara Pais are based in the UK and Portugal, where they make both long and short experimental films, as well as editing their own magazine Film Panic. According to their own self-description…
The experimental feature films of Daniel Fawcett & Clara Pais draw upon mythology, mysticism and the history of painting and cinema to create personal and poetic explorations into the nature of moving images. Concerned primarily with an investigation into the imagination and inner worlds, their visionary films are rich immersive experiences created with a strong sense of craft.
As well as the influence of dreams and visions, their unique cinematic universe grows from an investigation into the possibilities of film narrative and a desire to expand cinema as an art form. Their work is created from a belief that cinema is still young and that there are many dimensions to this medium that are yet to be explored.
Between them they have made eight feature length films and several short films. They also create installations and expanded cinema performances, programme screenings and publish Film Panic Magazine.
Throughout the year they will be collaborating on a year long interview, events, screenings and dance videos. 2019 will also mark the 10 year anniversary of One+One Filmmakers Journal, a project that ran from 2009-2015. Although One+One is no longer running it did help spawn multiple off-shoots (COTO – Culture On The Offensive, Film Panic Magazine and Exploding Appendix). The year long interview will, in part, help compile a history of these ten years as well as offering in an introduction to Daniel & Clara’s many projects.
Christmas Event
Finally, we would like thank all those who attended or were involved in our Christmas event on the 17th December. For this event we produced three films (see below), a selection of Christmas mash-ups (see below), and were delighted to host a live music improvisation session with Adele Nedelcu (see photography below by Vanessa Tudor, Veronika Teo and Lucy Le Brocq).
