In this salon we will not only explore the history of utopian thought but also invite participants to imagine and creatively map their own utopias. Together we’ll sketch, describe, and experiment with what a better world might look like for us today.
Alongside this playful exercise, we’ll trace a rich tradition of utopian imagination from Thomas More, Edward Bellamy, William Morris and Alexander Bogdanov through to Shulamith Firestone, Mario Miele, Ursula K. Le Guin, and Marge Piercy. We’ll also consider more contemporary models such as Erik Olin Wright’s Real Utopias Project, which looks for grounded, feasible pathways towards emancipation, and Michael Albert’s Participatory Economics (Parecon), a vision for a democratic and egalitarian economy.
Rather than treating utopia as a static dream, we’ll ask together: What is utopia for us now? How can utopian thought, and our own imaginative experiments, help us envision and enact better futures?
