Join us for an enlightening live conversation that delves into the intriguing realm of the Oulipo and its profound impact on modern thought. Established in 1960 by Raymond Queneau and François Le Lionnais, the Oulipo, an abbreviation for “OUvroir de LIttérature POtentielle,” captures the essence of a Workplace for Potential Literature. Renowned for their pioneering investigations into mathematical and stylistic constraints as vehicles for creating new literary horizons, the Oulipo forms a unique bridge between literature and mathematics.
The Oulipo navigated intricate restrictions, producing works that encompass homophonic translation, phonetical writing, text without the enigmatic ‘e,’ and sonnets with turnable lines, not pages. In his 2019 book, The Oulipo and Modern Thought, Dennis Duncan explores the way Oulipo’s activities were influenced by the intellectual currents around them, reading the Oulipo alongside psychoanalysis, structuralism, analytic philosophy and Surrealism.
Dennis Duncan (University College London) is the author of numerous books such as Pataphysical Letters: The Correspondence of René Daumal and Julien Torma (2012), Theory of the Great Game: Writings from Le Grand Jeu (2015), Tom McCarthy: Critical Essays (Co-edited 2016), Babel: Adventures in Translation (Co-edited 2018), The Oulipo and Modern Thought (2019), Book Parts (co-edited. 2019), and Index, The history of the (2021).
