Defending Arts and Culture in Brighton: A Call for Stories and Submissions

As part of our Defending Art and Culture in Brighton Series. We are attempting to build a dossier of individual stories centered around the many threats to art and culture in the city. We understand the words “arts and culture” broadly, and welcome voices that might include students, academics, teachers, researchers (any topic), youth workers, artists of any medium, entrepreneurs, art collectives and groups, people who are involved in art galleries, cinemas, music events, clubs and meet-ups, and people who attend them, and more.

Do you possess a unique tale to recount, centered around your personal encounters with arts and culture in Brighton and Hove? Have you found that the challenges of cuts or the escalating cost of living have left an imprint on your engagement with the city’s rich artistic landscape? Or maybe you have other concerns about the arts, education, community, creativity or culture in the city?

We are attempting to respond to two main questions that have formed out of our Defending Arts and Culture Meeting. These main questions are:

  • How is the current climate around Arts, Humanities and Culture affecting you right now and those around you in Brighton and Hove?
  • What do you think we need individually or collectively to sustain ourselves into the future.

Building upon these questions, we endeavour to curate a repository of diverse narratives that shed light on the current state of the arts, humanities, and culture in general.

We will assemble these narratives through audio interviews, questionnaires and other expressions subsequently sharing them with a wider audience. We wholeheartedly encourage you to contribute your unique voice to this collective tapestry. We would like to hear from a vast range of voices, so if you think you have something to say we would like to hear it. If your experiences have shaped a story waiting to be told, or if you are inclined to assist us in gathering and preserving these valuable accounts, we invite you to connect with us at explodingappendix@gmail.com.

This project will be running parallel with our dossier of manifestos for the city. If you would like to know more about that click here.
